La Plantation project also includes a project to preserve the Khmer architectural heritage. Traditional wooden architecture tends to disappear from the Cambodian rural landscape. So, we decided to buy different types of Khmer houses, disassemble and rebuilt them on our property.
Installation of the Sala Chan
The largest project was carried out in 2017 with the acquisition of a sala chan (monks' refectory) in a nearby village. It was doomed to abandonment and destruction. We bought this building in a pagoda, numbered each part before dismantling and transporting them. This 320m2 house was then reassembled at La Plantation piece by piece. Today the Sala Chan is used to welcome our visitors.
Other houses have also been installed and are used (sewing workshop) or inhabited by our employees. The Kid’s House is the last one having been installed at La Plantation.
The first museum in the world dedicated to pepper mills is in Kampot!
Kampot is the perfect place to highlight Pepper Mills. The city is renowned for centuries, all around the world, for its production of the #1 best quality pepper, the famous Kampot Pepper.
We therefore opened the world's first museum dedicated to pepper mills in a traditional colonial house in Kampot, named a Chinese compartment.
Carved in wood or finely carved in silver or crystal, originated from France, Italy, Turkey or Germany, the exhibition of mills evokes nearly a century and a half of evolution of mechanisms and styles. Available in every kitchen, from the amateur to the Michelin-starred chef, the pepper mill is a very popular cooking utensil. The collection at the Museum shows almost one hundred pepper mills, from Peugeot’s initial model inspired by the coffee mill, to design and contemporary creations.
We have been collecting pepper mills for many years and are pleased to exhibit our collection to visitors in Kampot.
